Latchi is not a marina in the Limassol sense. It is a small working harbour on the north-west coast, next to Polis, and it happens to be the front door to the best water on the island. If you want the Akamas and the Blue Lagoon, this is where you start — and how you start decides whether you get the place to yourself or share it with everyone else.
What Latchi is
A fishing and leisure harbour with a breakwater, a fuel point, a handful of tavernas on the quay and a fleet of day boats. Berths are limited and mostly taken by local and seasonal boats, so a visiting yacht should not assume a space: ask ahead, or plan to anchor off. It is a place you leave from, not a place you keep a large yacht.
That is precisely its charm. There is no resort, no shopping mall, and the drive from Paphos takes under an hour. The coast west of the harbour turns into the Akamas National Park within minutes of leaving the breakwater.
The boats you can rent
Three tiers, and the right one depends on who is aboard.
Small self-drive boats. Open motorboats you can hire without a licence up to a certain engine size, for a couple of hours or the day. Fine for two adults who are comfortable on the water and want to potter along the coast. Less fine with small children or with anyone who has not handled a boat before — the afternoon wind on this coast is real.
Skippered boats and RIBs. A local skipper, a faster boat, a route that gets you to the lagoon before the crowd and to the caves after it. For a family this is the right answer nearly every time: nobody is responsible for the boat except the person who does it daily.
Yachts and catamarans. A day or a week under sail or motor with a skipper, or bareboat for qualified sailors. A catamaran is the ideal Akamas boat — shallow draft for the bays, a flat deck for children, space for two families. The Blue Lagoon, done well
The lagoon is a shallow, sand-bottomed bay on the Akamas with water the colour of a swimming pool. It is also the most visited spot on the coast. Two rules make the difference.
Go early or go late. The mass day boats arrive late morning and leave mid-afternoon. A private boat leaving Latchi at nine has the lagoon almost alone; one leaving at four has it again, in better light.
Don't make it the whole day. The coast between Latchi and Cape Arnauti has a dozen smaller bays and coves, most of them empty. The lagoon is a stop, not the destination.
For a full day: lagoon early, then west along the coast, lunch at anchor in a quiet bay, swim, back to Latchi for a taverna on the quay. That is the day people remember.
Booking
For a self-drive boat, the operators on the quay take walk-ups outside peak weeks; in July and August book a day ahead. For a skippered boat or a yacht, book earlier — the good skippers are known and go first. Tell whoever you book with the ages of any children and whether anyone gets seasick; the route and the boat change accordingly.

When
May to October for swimming. June and September are the sweet spot: warm water, fewer people. High summer works — this coast is sheltered from the prevailing westerlies in the morning — but expect the lagoon to be busy by noon. The afternoon breeze picks up reliably; skippers plan around it, and so should you.
